Our History

Barksole Timeline

Barksole is one of the oldest shoe repair companies in South Africa, established in 1957. With over six decades in the industry, it has become a well-known and trusted brand for shoe, bag, and leather repairs, key cutting, engraving, and dry cleaning services.

While some older businesses like Taubin Shoe Repairs (1922) and the Wupperthal Shoe Factory (1836) existed before Barksole, many of them were either small, family-run operations or focused on manufacturing. Barksole, on the other hand, has built a strong presence as a franchised retail and service brand, making it one of the longest-standing and most established names in the South African shoe repair industry.

  • 1957: Barksole is founded by George Kavnat in Cape Town, opening the first shop on Upper Darling Street.
  • 1960s: Trevor Jackson, George’s nephew, joins the business, contributing to its growth and expansion.

As Barksole looks to the future, Barksole remains focused on innovation and maintaining its strong reputation. It is also taking on social responsibility by promoting a green and circular economy with its “repair, don’t replace” philosophy.
